Alberto Munoz

Alberto Munoz is a football coach, world languages teacher, and active member of his community in San Antonio. With over a decade of coaching experience and a teaching/principal certification for grades 6-12, Alberto encourages both academic and athletic growth at vital crossroads in young people’s lives.

Alberto attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and considers his choice of college the best academic decision he ever made. He met his wife during his time at school, as well as many of his lifelong friends and mentors. He joined a fraternity and worked his way up to become the president of the organization before he graduated with a B.A. in English in 1999. He is a former member of the Board of Directors for St. Mary’s Alumni Association and has served on several different committees which helped raise funds for student scholarships.

In 2000 Alberto began coaching high school football in Laredo, Texas. Since then he’s had the opportunity to coach at the highest levels of high school football; he has been a part of two state championship games, over 40 playoffs games, numerous district championships, and continues to help teams make the most of their talent. He is currently coaching the defensive backs, as well as assisting with special teams for the football team at O’Connor High School in Helotes, Texas. In the last two years the O’Connor Panthers have earned a record of 23-2, won back to back undefeated District Championships, back to back undefeated regular seasons, a Bi-District playoff appearance, and a State Quarter Final appearance.

Alberto is also an experienced soccer coach; he has been the head soccer coach at both Judson High School and Reagan High School in the San Antonio area. As the head coach of both programs, he has developed student handbooks, created the team’s athletic development program, outlined academic plans which maintained a 100% eligibility rate for some of his  teams, and won District Championships at both schools.

Alberto is passionate about coaching because he is able to have a positive, productive impact on young men’s lives and mentor them through the decisions and obstacles that they face.

Alberto also teaches English and Spanish at the secondary level. He received his Master of Education in Educational Administration from Lamar University and has also obtained his principal certification.

In addition to teaching and coaching, Alberto utilizes his passion for helping people as an active member of multiple nonprofit initiatives. Some of these initiatives are through his Alumni Association membership at St. Mary’s University. Each year, Alberto works on the organization’s Fiesta Oyster Bake, a 2-day volunteer driven event which attracts around 50,000 people to campus. The music festival unites campus organizations and various alumni in raising money for student scholarships.

Alberto is also a member of the Knights of Columbus, a nonprofit organization which supports the Catholic Church and local communities through various philanthropic efforts, such as blood drives and community-driven fundraisers.

Alberto is a co-director of the Joey Muñoz Memorial 5K Run, a race held in honor of his brother, who was tragically killed by a drunk driver. The race has been held annually for 26 years, and all of the money raised at the race is donated to nonprofit groups in Laredo, Texas. Joey was an avid athlete and cyclist, and his enthusiasm for outdoor sports and fitness continues to inspire Alberto to this day.

TASCO – “I had the opportunity to work alongside Coach Munoz for two years. I also coached against him in soccer while he was the Head Soccer Coach at Judson High School. Coach Munoz has always been a strong voice for the game of soccer. He has served the student/athletes of region 8 as a head coach, state advocate, and supporter. Over the years, Coach Munoz has also been an active member in both of our high school soccer coaching organizations, TASCO and THSCA. He has shown his dedication to the sport of high school soccer and its athletes by maintaining his involvement with these two organizations when he was not coaching soccer at the time. He held the position of a regional director with THSCA during my time working along side him and he was a strong advocate for the soccer coaches working directly with UIL. Coach Munoz has always been willing to help out in any way necessary to be an advocate for the sport, its coaches, and its athletes. ”

JOEY MUNOZ 5K – “Over the last 15 years Beto has been instrumental in the planning and running of the Joey Munoz 5K Memorial Run. The Joey Munoz Memorial 5K commemorates the achievements of Joey Munoz whose life was cut short by a drunk driver in the summer of 1990 at the age of 26. Joey was Beto’s older brother and I know Joey would be proud to know that we have kept this event going all these years, an event that Joey himself was trying to implement before his untimely death. The event’s goal is to raise funds that will be used to help support the youth of Laredo and honor the memory of man who was an active member and philanthropist in the community of Laredo.”
